Scenario planning is only useful with base rates attached. From the bundled nflverse game log (7,276 completed games, 1999–2025), here is how the “expected script” actually resolved, by the size of the closing spread:

Read the bottom row carefully before scripting a blowout: even double-digit favorites produced the run-out-the-clock scenario only about three times in eight, and lost outright once in seven. Every game-script prop chain built on “the favorite cruises” carries that 62.6% chance of the premise failing. Meanwhile 50.5% of all games finish within one score (8 points) — the “competitive throughout” script is the default, not a special case.

Implied team totals, worked and stress-tested

The implied-total formula above deserves a full pass, because it is the one piece of script analysis that is pure arithmetic. For a total of 47 and a spread of −7 (illustrative numbers in current format):

  • Favorite implied total = 47/2 + 7/2 = 27
  • Underdog implied total = 47/2 − 7/2 = 20

Those two numbers are the market's entire script forecast: a one-score game leaning one direction. Two honest cautions from the data on using them:

  • They are means, not medians. The average miss between actual margin and spread is 10.3 points, so “27–20” describes the center of a very wide distribution — scripts are scenario weights, never predictions.
  • The overtime tail is real: 6.0% of regular-season games since 1999 reached overtime (5.5% since 2017), and those games break every pregame script by definition.

Honest limitations

  • The bundled log has no play-by-play, so PROE, pace, and player-usage claims on this page are framework (from public play-by-play research), not numbers we computed. The blowout/upset table above is what this dataset proves directly.
  • “Blowout” here means final margin 17+. A team can lead by 17 and win by 3; final margins understate mid-game script variety.
  • Coach tendencies change faster than datasets. Any named-team pace example ages within a season or two; verify current usage before relying on it.
